Mindelo can be explored on foot in two or three days, and it is the Cape Verdean city where the music is most alive: bars playing morna in the evening, a harbour that shaped its history, beaches a few minutes away and, across the channel, Santo Antão. Here we tell you what to see, where to hear live music, how to eat without blowing your budget and how to organise the crossing to Santo Antão.

At a glance

  • Allow 2 to 3 days in town: the colonial centre, the market, the seafront promenade and Laginha can all be reached on foot.
  • In the evenings, live music is mostly concentrated from Thursday to Sunday, often free or with a small extra charge.
  • Baía das Gatas (natural swimming pool, festival in August) and Calhau (fishing village) are the simplest day trips.
  • A restaurant meal costs about 8 to 15 €, and a budget traveller gets by on 35 to 50 € a day.
  • From the port of Mindelo, the ferry to Porto Novo (Santo Antão) takes about an hour; the airport is 9 km from the centre.
  • For other islands, domestic flights are operated by CVsky, the national airline, from about 113 € to Praia (starting fare noted in early November 2026).

Mindelo, the port city of São Vicente

A port town that became a cultural capital

To understand Mindelo, you have to look at the sea. The site was founded in 1793 under the name Nossa Senhora da Luz, renamed Mindelo in 1838, when the bay of Porto Grande became a coal depot for British ships. The town gained city status in 1879, and an undersea cable laid in 1884 made it a communications relay for the British Empire. Transatlantic traffic later collapsed, but the town kept its colonial facades and an outward-looking spirit.

This past explains why Mindelo is called the cultural capital of the country, even though the administration is in Praia. Cesária Évora was born there, morna remains part of everyday life, and the city was the cultural capital of the Lusophone world from November 2002 to November 2003. Mindelo had 70,468 inhabitants at the 2010 census; the 2021 census (provisional results) attributes 15.3% of the national population to the concelho of São Vicente, or about 74,000 people. As for the climate, it is desert-like: an average of about 24.6 °C over the year and around one hundred millimetres of rain a year, with wind present almost all year round.

What to see in Mindelo

The centre fits into a small rectangle that you can walk without a map. Start at Praça Nova (Praça Amílcar Cabral), where the town gathers in the late afternoon, then head down towards the seafront.

If you like following a thread, trace Cesária Évora’s story: the town has several tributes and the house where she lived. For musical context, our article on funaná is a good complement to what you will hear in the bars in the evening. And if you are unsure how long to stay, ask the local agency to fit Mindelo into your itinerary.

Where to hear music and go out in the evening

In Mindelo, a night out often revolves around dinner: morna, coladeira and funaná are played live, mostly from Thursday to Sunday, and some venues charge a small extra on concert nights. Casa Tchicau and the Nautilus restaurant offer live music during dinner; Café Royal and Caravela, facing Laginha beach, are good starting points for the evening. For a more local night out, the small bars serve grogue (sugarcane rum) and pontche at modest prices, and the local beer is Strela.

Two events mark the year. Carnival, in February, is one of the biggest in the country and keeps a strong Brazilian influence. The Baía das Gatas festival takes place in August, outdoors, on the east coast. If you want to attend, lock in your dates now: accommodation fills up quickly, and having the local agency book your Carnival stay saves you from hunting for a room at the last minute.

Beaches and outings around Mindelo

Laginha is the town beach, north of the centre, with pale sand, calm water and room for paddleboarding or kayaking. A little further on, Baía das Gatas, on the east coast, has a natural swimming pool sheltered by rocks, considered safe for families. Calhau is a fishing village with a volcanic landscape, known for its fish restaurants. Finally, Monte Verde, the island’s highest point at 750 m, offers a hiking trail and a view that reaches as far as Santo Antão. To go further, our guide things to do in São Vicente covers outings across the whole island.

Where to eat and stay

Cachupa, a stew of corn and beans, is eaten at the kiosks and cafés around Praça Nova for a few euros, including the “refogada” version (fried with an egg) for breakfast. The port serves grilled tuna, wahoo, octopus and lobster. For a first dinner, Nautilus (fresh fish, facing the water) works well; Caravela offers traditional cooking in front of Laginha, and Kalimba Beach Club suits a beach lunch in a more touristy atmosphere.

Continuing on to Santo Antão

From Mindelo, Santo Antão is reached by ferry to Porto Novo, in about an hour; the island has no airport. There are several departures a day, but timetables and fares change with the season and the operator: buy your ticket at the port the day before, and plan to leave in the morning to keep some margin. Timetables have already changed several times, so confirm the day’s departure at the ticket office when you buy. If your flight lands late in the day in São Vicente, sleep in Mindelo and take the first boat the next day.

To continue to other islands by air, CVsky, Cape Verde’s national airline, now operates the connections. Certified on 24 December 2025, it has flown ATR 72-600 aircraft since March 2026, and its winter schedule runs until 27 March 2027. In early November 2026, CVsky was advertising starting fares from 12,498 CVE (about 113 €) for São Vicente–Praia and 12,698 CVE (about 115 €) for São Vicente–Sal; only its booking engine shows the actual price for your dates.
