Santa Luzia, Cape Verde: Everything you need to know
Santa Luzia: The uninhabited island

Santa Luzia is a unique island in the Cape Verde archipelago. The only uninhabited island, it is distinguished by its arid landscapes, wild beaches and unique ecosystem. A raw environment, Santa Luzia attracts those who wish to explore unspoiled nature and discover the fauna and flora characteristic of the desert islands of the Atlantic. With an area of 35 km², this island is a sanctuary for biodiversity and a place where the hand of man is almost absent.
Santa Luzia: A biodiversity sanctuary
Santa Luzia has been classified as a nature reserve, and it is under the protection of the Cape Verdean authorities due to the richness of its fauna and flora. The island is home to endemic species and offers ideal conditions for observing marine life and migratory birds. Indeed, Santa Luzia is a crucial habitat for some rare bird species, as well as a nesting site for loggerhead turtles. This nature reserve status allows the island to remain a pristine area, where biodiversity can flourish freely without the impact of urbanization.

Access and exploration of Santa Luzia
The lack of infrastructure on Santa Luzia means that access is limited and visitors must be well prepared. The island is accessible only by boat from São Vicente, mainly for day trips or guided tours, due to conservation regulations. Cape Verdean authorities and some local NGOs organize tours for visitors, with an emphasis on respecting the environment and preserving the island's fragile ecosystem.
Notable species:
Loggerhead turtles: Santa Luzia is a nesting site for this endangered species, attracting turtles during the nesting season. The turtles return each year to lay their eggs on the island's sandy beaches.
Seabirds and migratory birds: The cliffs of the island are home to several species of seabirds, some of which are rare and endemic to Cape Verde. The island is also a stopover for migratory birds, making it a point of interest for ornithologists.
Marine life: Around Santa Luzia, the waters are home to diverse marine species, including tropical fish, corals and marine mammals such as dolphins and whales, especially during migration season.

The landscapes of Santa Luzia: Aridity and pristine beaches
The climate of Santa Luzia is desert, characterized by high temperatures and low rainfall. The landscape is therefore composed of sand dunes, isolated wild beaches and rocky plateaus.
Mountains and plateaus: The island is dominated by Monte Topona, its highest peak, which rises to about 395 meters. From here, visitors can enjoy a clear view of the entire island and the surrounding waters.
Climate and season: The island's desert climate makes for high temperatures throughout the year, with constant sunshine. Rainfall is rare, and vegetation is limited to a few shrubs and plants that are resistant to arid conditions.
Activities and exploration:
Hiking and exploring the beaches: Santa Luzia is an island that lends itself to walks and hikes, with unmarked but accessible trails. Visitors, accompanied by their guide, can discover the deserted beaches, sand dunes and cliffs, while taking care not to disturb the wildlife.
Wildlife observation: Always with the accompaniment of specialized guides, it is possible to observe loggerhead turtles, seabirds and the surrounding marine life. The turtle nesting season, in particular, is a highlight for observation, although strictly regulated to ensure the safety of the animals.
Scuba diving and snorkeling: Although Santa Luzia does not have infrastructure for these activities, the waters around the island are an excellent spot for snorkeling and diving. Visitors can explore the marine biodiversity, admiring tropical fish and coral reefs.
Protection and conservation of Santa Luzia
As Santa Luzia is a nature reserve, several efforts are being made to protect this unique ecosystem. Conservation programs are in place to monitor turtle and bird populations, and limit the impact of rare human visits. NGOs, such as the Tartaruga Foundation, work closely with the authorities to preserve nesting beaches and monitor the evolution of endemic species.
Rules to follow for visitors:
Respect for laying sites: During the turtle nesting period (June to October), it is forbidden to approach the nests or disturb the animals.
Protection of flora and fauna: It is strictly forbidden to pick plants, disturb animals or leave waste on the island.
Controlled activities: All tourist activity must be supervised and respect the conservation regulations put in place by the Cape Verdean authorities.
Although Santa Luzia is an uninhabited and protected island, it is not immune to the effects of global pollution. Due to ocean currents, plastic waste from elsewhere regularly washes up on its beaches, endangering local wildlife. This “imported” pollution poses a major challenge to conservation efforts, as it threatens the island’s fragile ecosystem. In addition, global warming is contributing to coastal erosion and rising sea levels, gradually changing Santa Luzia’s natural landscapes and posing risks to its unique biodiversity.

Santa Luzia is an island where silence, solitude and the vastness of nature meet. It is a place outside of time, where visitors are immersed in a world without human intervention, where every element has remained intact and authentic. Santa Luzia is a testimony to wild nature, a raw land that the Cape Verdean authorities are striving to preserve for future generations. Although not very accessible and strictly protected, Santa Luzia is a jewel of the archipelago, a symbol of Cape Verde's biodiversity and the importance of preserving ecosystems.
