The origin of funana: the history of Cape Verdean music

Le funana took root on the island of Santiago in the 19th centurye century. Initially, this musical genre was the joyful expression of Cape Verdean peasants, banned from playing guitar by Portuguese colonists and who then diverted the accordion (gaita) and the ferrinho.

The name funaná is said to be associated with a duo who gained great renown in Santiago thanks to their talent: Funa, master of the gaita (bagpipe), and Naná, who accompanied him on the ferrinho, an idiophone. Their skill and harmony inspired the name of this emblematic dance and music.

  • Long marginalized, seen as “primitive” or “rustic” by the colonial elite, it was even banned in cities until Cape Verde’s independence in 1975.
  • From the 1980s onwards, the city's youth took hold of it: Bulimundo electrified the style, and the festivals of Praia and Assomada went wild.
  • 1990s: Funana sets out to conquer the world thanks to Ferro Gaita and the diaspora.

Funana is the revenge of rurality and tradition over colonization. It illustrates the intermingling and affirmation of the Cape Verdean soul!

The instruments and rhythm of funana: DNA of a genre

The real magic of funana : these are two signature instruments, with raw energy and an irresistible groove.

  • Gaita: diatonic accordion adopted and transformed locally from the end of the 19th centurye century.
  • Ferrinho: a rubbed iron rod, accentuating the rhythm (often in 2/4), develops a unique and easily recognizable sound.
  • In the modern version, electric bass, drums or keyboards sometimes come for a “total party” effect.

The result: a fast tempo, a heavy beat, haunting riffs that call for dancing... Whether you're in Sal, Boa Vista or Fogo, it's impossible to resist!

Live Funana is a shot of pure energy : just try not to move, impossible!

Funana: more than just music, a popular dance

Dancing funana is quite an experience. Traditionally, couples dance in close quarters, their lower bodies moving in sync to a frenetic rhythm.

  • Ultra physical dance, direct connection with the music and other festival-goers.
  • A festive spirit, sometimes bawdy, always joyful: we come to “celebrate life” more than to perform.
  • No party, wedding, baptism or event is complete without a few well-crafted titles!

Funana is the antidote to morna: we forget nostalgia, we celebrate life!
